This small bulbous vase is part of my experimental glaze series, where bold colour and surface texture take centre stage. The inspiration for this piece came from the fiery tones found in a tiger’s fur, though the rich orange and deep brown contrasts could just as easily be compared to the colours of a bumblebee. The glowing sunset-like oranges are my favourite element of the piece, bringing warmth and movement across the surface.
The vase is finished with a glossy brown base glaze to contrast the vivid, flowing top half. During firing, the upper glaze developed bubbling and texture, something I initially considered smoothing away, but ultimately chose to keep. Those bubbled surfaces are what catch the light and emphasise the flowing colour transitions, highlights, and contrasts within the glaze.
This is not a piece that sits quietly on a shelf; it’s designed to stand out, drawing attention through both colour and texture while celebrating the unpredictable beauty of experimental ceramics.
There were only two of these made and this is the last remaining.
